Insurance in Denmark: what is mandatory, what is critical, what you can skip
Several policies are mandatory in Denmark: employers must carry work-injury insurance (arbejdsskadeforsikring), vehicles on public roads need liability insurance, dog owners must insure their dog, and some residence permits require specific cover. For daily life, the one policy almost everyone needs is indboforsikring, which bundles contents, personal liability and legal-expenses cover.

What insurance is actually mandatory in Denmark?
Several policies are mandatory, and as an employee most of them are not your problem.
Employers must take out arbejdsskadeforsikring (work-injury insurance) for their staff. It covers employees, or their survivors, for injury or illness caused by work. It is not something you buy as an employee, and there is no opting out, as Forsikringsoplysningen explains.
Anyone who owns a car, motorcycle or moped must have liability insurance (ansvarsforsikring) to use it on a public road. It covers damage you cause to other people and their property, not your own car or yourself as the driver. If you do not pay it, the police can seize your number plates, and you pay any damage yourself. See borger.dk and Forsikringsoplysningen.
If you own a dog, you must hold liability insurance (hundeansvarsforsikring) for it. Hundeloven (the Dog Act) makes the person keeping a dog liable for the damage it causes and requires the dog to be liability-insured, with the insurer answerable directly to the injured party, per Retsinformation and Forsikringsoplysningen.
Some residence permits carry an insurance requirement. A host family for an au pair, for example, must take out three policies covering the au pair: work-related injuries, leisure-time accidents, and transport home in the event of death or serious illness, according to Ny i Danmark.
Privately, if you employ household help for more than 400 hours in a calendar year you must also take out work-injury insurance. Below that threshold the state scheme, Arbejdsmarkedets Erhvervssikring (AES), pays instead, per Forsikringsoplysningen.
What is the one insurance almost everyone needs?
Indboforsikring (contents insurance). It bundles several covers in one: your possessions against fire, theft and water damage, a liability cover if you damage someone else’s things or injure someone, and legal-expenses cover (retshjælpsforsikring) for certain private disputes. It usually covers your bike too, but only if it was locked with an approved lock, and normally only up to a fixed maximum, as Forsikringsoplysningen explains.
If you rent, it protects your belongings and covers your personal liability when you are legally responsible for damaging someone else’s property or injuring someone, for example through carelessness; a pure accident where you are not at fault is usually not covered. Away from home, theft is more limited: a laptop taken in a café counts as simple theft (simpelt tyveri), which typically pays only a fixed maximum for electronics and excludes cash and jewellery, per Forsikringsoplysningen. Most Danes treat indboforsikring as essential rather than optional.
What should you add, and what can you skip?
Worth adding:
- Ulykkesforsikring (personal accident insurance) pays out if an accident leaves you with a permanent injury (varigt mén). Insurers typically start paying at 5% disability, per Forsikringsoplysningen’s FAQ.
- Rejseforsikring (travel insurance) for trips outside Denmark, including medical care, repatriation and cancellation.
- Sundhedsforsikring (private health insurance) if you want faster access to private treatment than the public system offers.
You can usually skip separate phone or appliance insurance, which is often poor value, and you do not need duplicate health cover if your employer already provides sundhedsforsikring.
Does Danish public healthcare mean you can skip health insurance?
For treatment inside Denmark, mostly yes. Anyone registered in the CPR register is covered by the national health service and gets a yellow health card (sundhedskort), which gives free GP visits and hospital treatment and subsidies for medicine, dentists, physiotherapy and more, per sundhed.dk.
That cover does not travel with you. Outside Denmark you pay foreign prices unless you hold travel insurance or an EHIC. A private sundhedsforsikring is about speed and choice, not about whether you can be treated at all.
What about sygeforsikringen “danmark”?
Sygeforsikringen “danmark” is a voluntary, non-profit supplement that most Danes join. Members get more than 350 fixed subsidies, for example towards dentists, glasses, medicine, physiotherapy and vaccination, and children can be added free until they turn 16. It is not a replacement for indboforsikring or private health insurance; it tops up what the public system does not pay.
What do these insurances cost?
Prices depend on your address, age, excess and cover level, so treat any figure as a starting point. The measured 2026 figures below come from Sammenligner’s price index, which quotes the median across real quotes.
| Insurance | Typical cost (2026) |
|---|---|
| Indboforsikring | 2,909 kr a year median (1 adult, rented Copenhagen flat, 1 mio. kr. contents, 2,000 kr. excess); cheapest around 2,042 kr |
| Bilforsikring (liability + kasko) | 5,500 kr a year median (fixed panel of 58 cars, same driver) |
| Liability-only car insurance | Cheaper than the above; varies most by driver and car |
| Ulykkesforsikring | Varies widely, so shop around |
| Travel insurance | Varies by destination, trip length and age, so get quotes |

How do you compare and switch insurers?
- Work out what you actually need. Contents and liability cover first, then accident, travel and health.
- Compare cover and price. Forsikringsguiden.dk, run with the Consumer Council TÆNK, compares prices and cover; Forsikringsoplysningen explains the terms in plain language.
- Get at least three quotes. For the same profile, Sammenligner measured contents quotes from 2,042 kr to 5,062 kr a year across 14 insurers, so the spread is real.
- Check the small print: excess (selvrisiko), the maximum sum insured, and what is excluded.
- Cancelling at your policy’s normal renewal is free with about a month’s notice; cancelling mid-term costs a fee, so check your terms. Many new insurers will handle the cancellation for you, so take out the new policy first.
When should you arrange insurance after arriving?
Sort out indboforsikring as soon as you have a permanent address, ideally the week you move in. Cover normally starts the day you take it out, but a theft that happened before the policy started will not be paid. If you rent, your landlord’s building insurance covers the building itself, not your belongings, so contents cover is yours to arrange.
If you drive, do not wait. Liability insurance is a condition of using a car on the road, and driving uninsured can cost you the car’s plates as well as any damages you cause. If you ride an e-bike that can reach 45 km/h, remember it needs its own motor liability insurance rather than your contents policy.
If you are self-employed, the rules depend on your legal form. As a sole trader (enkeltmandsvirksomhed) you are not required to insure yourself for work injuries, but you can take out voluntary cover; if you employ anyone, you must insure them. If your business is a limited company (ApS or A/S), you must cover yourself against work injuries even if you are the only person in it, per Forsikringsoplysningen.
What it costs & how long it takes
Sammenligner’s 2026 contents index gives a median of 2,909 kr a year for one adult in a rental (cheapest around 2,042 kr), measured for a 35-year-old living alone in a rented Copenhagen flat with 1 mio. kr. in contents and a 2,000 kr. excess. Car liability plus kasko had a median of 5,500 kr a year on a fixed panel of 58 cars; young or newly licensed drivers, and those without a claims history, usually pay much more. Quotes are instant online, and cover usually starts the same day or the next.
Common mistakes
- Assuming your employer’s insurance covers your home. It usually does not.
- Buying a health policy you already have through work.
- Choosing on price alone and missing a low sum insured or a high excess.
- Forgetting travel cover, then paying foreign hospital bills yourself.
- Letting a car sit uninsured. The police can seize the plates.
If something goes wrong
If you disagree with a payout, complain to the insurer first, in writing, and keep your policy documents, receipts and photos. If you are still stuck, you can take the case to Ankenævnet for Forsikring, the independent complaints board for insurance in Denmark.
Frequently asked
Do I need health insurance in Denmark?
Not for treatment inside Denmark. Anyone in the CPR register is covered by the national health service and gets free GP visits and hospital care with a yellow health card. You only need private health or travel insurance for faster private treatment or for care outside Denmark.
Is contents insurance (indboforsikring) compulsory?
No, it is not required by law. In practice most Danes treat it as essential because it covers your belongings, your personal liability if you damage someone else's property, and legal expenses for certain disputes, all in one policy.
What does an indboforsikring cost?
Sammenligner's 2026 index gives a median of 2,909 kr a year across 14 insurers, with the cheapest around 2,042 kr, measured for a 35-year-old living alone in a rented flat in Copenhagen with 1 mio. kr. in contents and a 2,000 kr. excess. Price depends strongly on your address, the sum insured, your excess and any add-ons.
Can I skip car insurance if I do not drive much?
No. Liability insurance is mandatory for any motor vehicle used on a public road. Without it the police can seize your number plates and you pay any damage you cause yourself. Kasko cover for your own car is optional.
How do I switch insurance companies?
Get quotes from at least three insurers. Cancelling at your policy's normal renewal date is free if you give about a month's notice, and your new insurer will often handle the cancellation for you. Cancelling mid-term with short notice costs a fee, so check your terms.
