Gyms in Denmark: chains, prices and cheaper options (2026)
Most gyms in Denmark are rolling memberships you can cancel with about one month's notice. PureGym starts at DKK 249 a month, LOOP at DKK 289 per 30 days, FitnessX at DKK 300 and SATS at around DKK 549 (October 2026). On a budget, a kommune swimming pool or a sports club is usually cheaper still.
- Budget gym
- PureGym Core from DKK 249/month (Oct 2026)
- Premium gym
- SATS Basic DKK 549/month at Field's (Oct 2026)
- Typical notice
- Rest of the current month plus one month
- Copenhagen pool
- DKK 58 a swim, DKK 31 in Green Time (Oct 2026)
- Short stay
- Prepaid passes: PureGym 6 months from DKK 1,399
Which gym chains operate in Denmark, and which is cheapest?
Four national chains cover most of the country: PureGym (cheapest entry price, the most centres), LOOP Fitness (small 24-minute circuit gyms), FitnessX (mid-market, priced by how many centres you want) and SATS (the premium chain with the most classes). Prices below are each chain’s own published figures, read in October 2026.
Two names you may still hear no longer exist as gyms. Fitness World became PureGym: the British owner renamed the Danish chain from 2023, with the same centres and staff PureGym. Urban Gym, Fitness World’s former budget chain, was folded into Fitness World at the end of 2020 RetailNews, and urbangym.dk now hosts an unrelated site. The Gym Group is a UK chain; its gym finder lists no Danish locations.
| Chain | Monthly price (Oct 2026) | Joining fee | Notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| PureGym Core / Plus / Unlimited | from DKK 249 / 319 / 429 | DKK 99 | Rest of month + 1 month |
| LOOP Fitness | DKK 289 per 30 days + DKK 10 admin fee | None on the current offer | Current 30 days + 30 days |
| FitnessX | DKK 300-450 depending on centres and age | Not published on its price list | Rest of month + 1 month |
| SATS Basic / Flexible / Premium (KBH Field’s) | DKK 549 / 599 / 699 | Charged, amount not published | 1 month, from the end of the next month |
In some countries the headline gym price assumes a 12-month contract. At these four chains it does not: the advertised monthly price is for a rolling membership, and a bindingsperiode (minimum contract term) only comes with some campaign offers. “From” means the lowest price: PureGym’s and FitnessX’s prices vary by home centre and by whether you are under or over 30 PureGym FitnessX. The age split exists because since 1 January 2026, commercial instruction in fitness, dance and yoga carries VAT for adults aged 30 and over, while instruction for younger members does not skat.dk.
What do you actually get at each price level?
PureGym has three tiers. Core gives you one centre and the app; Plus adds more centres, classes (some for a fee) and bringing a friend four times a month; Unlimited adds every centre, all classes including Reformer and the friend visits PureGym. Watch the small fees: DKK 39 for missing a class you booked and DKK 39 per invoice if you pay by paper bill instead of card or Betalingsservice.
LOOP Fitness is a different idea: small centres built around circuit training, a 24-minute round of machines, in more than 130 centres. You are charged every 30 days, not every calendar month, so you pay 13 times a year, each time with a DKK 10 admin fee LOOP Fitness LOOP terms. In October 2026 LOOP was running an offer of DKK 100 for the rest of the year with no joining fee, then DKK 289 per 30 days.
FitnessX has 33 centres and sells memberships by “category”: the more centres you want access to, the higher the price. For over-30s, DKK 350 to DKK 450 a month; under 30, DKK 300 to DKK 400 (price list from 17 August 2026). The “Træningsven” (training buddy) option adds a second person for DKK 200 more FitnessX.
SATS is the premium end: bigger centres, more classes, and saunas in some locations. At KBH Field’s in October 2026, Basic (one centre) was DKK 549, Flexible (all Danish centres) DKK 599 and Premium (all Nordic centres) DKK 699 a month SATS. Every new member gets one free trial session with a personal trainer.
Is there a student or off-peak price?
- PureGym: 40% off Unlimited for 12 months plus free sign-up for students aged 18-29 with a valid student card, with the code STUDIERABAT. This offer ends on 20 October 2026; after that, PureGym’s student page points students to Core PureGym.
- LOOP: 15% off, DKK 245.65 per 30 days plus the DKK 10 fee and a DKK 199 joining fee. Show your student card at a staffed centre LOOP Fitness.
- SATS: students, young people and seniors get 20% off SATS.
- FitnessX: no student price as such, but under-30 prices are lower.
None of the four chains publishes an off-peak gym membership. The off-peak bargain is at the pool (see below).
What are the cheaper options people miss?
Your kommune’s swimming pool. In Copenhagen, a single adult swim costs DKK 58, or DKK 31 in “Grøn tid” (Green Time, cheaper off-peak slots). A 12-swim card is DKK 592, a Green Time annual pass DKK 1,202 and a student annual pass DKK 598. The harbour baths and outdoor swimming areas are free SvømKBH. Other kommuner run their own pools with their own prices, so look on your kommune’s website.
Idrætsforeninger (sports clubs). A sports club is the cheapest way to train regularly with a coach, and many clubs run their own fitness rooms (“foreningsfitness”). DGI supports these club-run fitness centres across the country DGI. Commercial instruction for over-30s now carries VAT, but sports in clubs remain VAT-free skat.dk. Your kommune lists local clubs by sport; Copenhagen does it by district, for example Amager and Christianshavn. How clubs work, what they cost and how to get in is in our guide to joining clubs in Denmark.
How does a personal trainer work, and what does one cost?
In Denmark a personal trainer (PT) is an add-on you buy on top of your membership, not something included. You normally buy a package of sessions (“klip”, clips) or a monthly PT subscription, and the bigger the package, the lower the price per session.
- PureGym publishes a starting price of DKK 506 per session, depending on the package, and lets you split payment over 6 or 12 months. The first consultation is free PureGym.
- SATS sells 55-minute (PT60), 25-minute (PT30) and two-person (PT Duo) sessions. The price depends on the trainer’s level, which reflects experience and education, and on the package size. SATS’s PT page does not publish the price, so ask in the app or at reception SATS.
To check a trainer’s qualifications, ask what training they hold and, at SATS, which level they are. “Personal trainer” is not one of Denmark’s authorised health professions, so there is no public register of PTs. If you need injury rehabilitation, look for a physiotherapist (fysioterapeut) instead: they are authorised, and you can look them up in the Danish Patient Safety Authority’s register.
What should you know before you sign up?
The notice period trap. “Rest of the month plus one month” means cancelling on 2 March keeps you paying until 30 April. Cancel in the app or on “Mit PureGym” / “Min side” and keep the email receipt; FitnessX tells members to do exactly that FitnessX. At SATS, notice takes effect at the end of the following month, and if your membership came with a bindingsperiode (minimum contract term), you pay until it ends SATS.
Campaign prices end. Discount codes and “DKK 100 for the rest of the year” offers roll into the normal price automatically. Put the date in your calendar.
Bringing a guest. PureGym Plus and Unlimited members can bring a friend four times a month. Elsewhere your guest buys a pass: SATS drop-in DKK 149 SATS, FitnessX day pass DKK 75 FitnessX, LOOP day pass DKK 75, PureGym day pass from DKK 79 (October 2026).
CPR number and Danish card. You join online and pay by card at all four chains. None of the price or terms pages we read lists a CPR number as a requirement, but we could not test every sign-up flow. Betalingsservice (Danish direct debit) needs a Danish bank account, so pay by card until you have one; PureGym charges nothing for card payment and DKK 39 per paper invoice PureGym.
Only here for six months? Buy prepaid. PureGym’s prepaid memberships run 1 month from DKK 299, 3 months from DKK 749 and 6 months from DKK 1,399; they end automatically and cannot be cancelled early PureGym. LOOP sells passes from one day (DKK 75) to four weeks (DKK 349), paid in the centre LOOP Fitness. LOOP’s prepaid memberships cannot be refunded either LOOP terms.
Common mistakes
- Comparing the “from” price at one gym with the full price at another.
- Forgetting LOOP bills every 30 days, so a year has 13 payments.
- Signing a discount offer without reading whether it adds a binding period.
- Paying for a gym you visit twice a month, when a 12-swim pool card or a club would cost less.
- Booking classes and not showing up: PureGym charges DKK 39 per no-show.
Frequently asked
What is the cheapest gym in Denmark?
Among the national chains, PureGym's Core membership is the lowest published monthly price at DKK 249 a month for one centre (October 2026), and FitnessX's cheapest category is DKK 300. A sports club or your kommune's pool is often cheaper again, especially if you train only a few times a week.
Is there a minimum contract (bindingsperiode) at Danish gyms?
The standard memberships at PureGym, LOOP and FitnessX are rolling, with notice of the rest of the month plus one month (LOOP: the current 30-day period plus 30 days). SATS uses one month's notice, but some campaign offers add a bindingsperiode. Read the offer terms before you use a discount code.
Can I join a Danish gym for just a few months?
Yes. PureGym sells prepaid memberships of one, three, six or twelve months that end automatically, and LOOP and FitnessX sell day, week and multi-week passes. That avoids the notice period completely.
Do I need a CPR number to join a gym?
The chains we checked sign you up online and take payment by card, and none of the price or terms pages we read listed a CPR number as a requirement. Payment by Betalingsservice needs a Danish bank account, so use a card if you do not have one yet.
Can I bring a friend who is not a member?
At PureGym, Plus and Unlimited members can bring a friend four times a month. FitnessX sells a paid 'Træningsven' (training buddy) add-on instead, and SATS and LOOP sell day passes the guest can buy themselves.
