Danish tax rates 2026: the brackets, the two ceilings, and what you keep
Denmark takes 8% labour market contribution off your gross pay first. The state then takes 12.01% bottom-bracket tax, a 7.5% middle-bracket tax above DKK 641,200 of income after that contribution, 7.5% top-bracket tax above DKK 777,900 and 5% above DKK 2,592,700. Your municipality takes between 23.39% and 26.30%.

How Danish tax is built: three layers, in a fixed order
Danish tax on a salary is not one rate, and the order in which the layers are applied is what most people get wrong.
- Labour market contribution (arbejdsmarkedsbidrag, AM-bidrag) of 8% comes off your gross pay first. It is not income tax and it is not optional: your employer withholds it from every krone of pay before anything else happens skat.dk. From 2026 you pay none of it before the calendar year in which you turn 18.
- Income tax is then calculated on what is left - your personal income. That is municipal tax, bottom-bracket state tax, and from 2026 the middle, top and extra top brackets.
- Allowances are subtracted before tax is worked out, but not all of them are worth the same. Your personal allowance reduces both the state and the municipal calculation; the employment and job allowances only reduce the municipal one, as below.
What is left is your net pay. Your employer withholds the whole thing through your tax card, so the rate you see on a payslip is the withholding rate, not the final one - the final number is settled in your annual tax assessment the following March.
What the 2026 rates and thresholds are
The state taxes, after the labour market contribution has been deducted skat.dk:
| State tax | 2026 rate | Applies above |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom-bracket tax (bundskat) | 12.01% | Your personal allowance |
| Middle-bracket tax (mellemskat) | 7.5% | DKK 641,200 |
| Top-bracket tax (topskat) | 7.5% | DKK 777,900 |
| Extra top-bracket tax (toptopskat) | 5% | DKK 2,592,700 |
Those thresholds are stated after the labour market contribution; in gross salary terms they are about DKK 697,000, DKK 845,500 and DKK 2,818,000 (our division, since the contribution is 8%). The rates and the thresholds are in the personal income tax act, and Skatteministeriet publishes them each year alongside the statutory figures Skatte- og Vækstministeriet.
On top of the state taxes comes municipal tax, which is the biggest single component of most people’s tax bill:
| Municipal tax 2026 | Rate |
|---|---|
| Copenhagen - the lowest rate in the country | 23.39% |
| National average | 25.049% |
| The highest rate, in a group of municipalities including Lolland, Læsø, Svendborg and Vordingborg | 26.30% |
| Church tax, members of the national church (national average) | 0.867% |
The average and the extremes are Skatteministeriet’s own figures average, per municipality. Copenhagen being the cheapest place in Denmark to be taxed is not a typo: it has held the lowest municipal rate for years.
What changed in 2026: one bracket became three
Until 2025 there was one high-income bracket: top-bracket tax of 15% above DKK 611,800, described as a “top tax”. The tax reform adopted in 2024 Retsinformation renamed it and added two new rates, so 2026 is the first year with three high-income brackets:
- Middle-bracket tax, 7.5% above DKK 641,200 - the old top-bracket tax, renamed and with a higher starting point.
- Top-bracket tax, 7.5% above DKK 777,900 - new.
- Extra top-bracket tax, 5% above DKK 2,592,700 - new.
Two consequences matter when you read an old guide or an old salary calculator: any page quoting “top tax 15% above DKK 611,800” describes 2025, and any page quoting a 52.07% tax ceiling is also describing 2025.
What three salaries actually leave you
Here is the arithmetic end to end, for a single person with no church tax, no pension contribution and no deductions beyond the three automatic allowances, living in Copenhagen at the country’s lowest municipal rate of 23.39% skat.dk:
| Gross salary a year | You keep, a year | You keep, a month |
|---|---|---|
| DKK 400,000 | DKK 269,533 | DKK 22,461 |
| DKK 600,000 | DKK 391,274 | DKK 32,606 |
| DKK 900,000 | DKK 551,803 | DKK 45,984 |
That is a total deduction of 32.6%, 34.8% and 38.7%. Broken down, the DKK 600,000 salary pays DKK 48,000 in labour market contribution, DKK 100,928 in municipal tax and DKK 59,798 in state tax - the last of which includes middle-bracket tax only on income above DKK 641,200 and top-bracket tax only above DKK 777,900. In the national average municipality the same three salaries leave DKK 265,223, DKK 384,116 and DKK 540,065 a year.
These are our calculations from the published 2026 rates, not a figure quoted from Skattestyrelsen, and the two assumptions that move them most are that you are resident and taxed in Denmark for the whole year and that you pay no pension contribution of your own. For your own numbers, change your preliminary income assessment in E-tax, where the tax card and the rate are generated automatically skat.dk.
The marginal cost of a rise is worth knowing before you negotiate. In Copenhagen an extra DKK 1,000 of gross pay is reduced by DKK 406 while only bottom-bracket tax applies, DKK 475 while middle-bracket tax applies, DKK 544 while top-bracket tax applies and DKK 590 above DKK 2,818,000. In a 26.30% municipality only the first figure changes, to DKK 432 - the ceiling described in the next section flattens the rest to DKK 490, DKK 559 and DKK 605, the same as in the average municipality.
The tax ceiling: 44.57%, and what it does not cover
The ceiling (skatteloft) is 44.57% of personal income in 2026, down from 52.07% in 2025. The rule is specific: if the sum of bottom-bracket tax, middle-bracket tax and your municipal tax rate exceeds 44.57%, the middle-bracket tax is reduced by the difference info.skat.dk. Three things follow, and all three catch people out:
- It is a cap on three taxes, not on your whole bill. Top-bracket tax and extra top-bracket tax are added on top of the ceiling, and the 8% labour market contribution and church tax are outside it entirely skat.dk.
- It only bites in expensive municipalities. Add the published rates up: 12.01% bottom bracket plus 7.5% middle bracket leaves 25.06% for your municipality before the ceiling starts cutting anything. Copenhagen, at 23.39%, is nowhere near it. In a 26.30% municipality it does cut, which is why Skatteministeriet’s own municipal table carries a column for the ceiling reduction.
- Read together with the brackets, it gives the practical maximum. 44.57% of personal income for anyone up to the middle bracket, 52.07% once top-bracket tax applies, 57.07% once the extra top-bracket tax applies - because each new tax is added above the cap rather than inside it. Add the 8% contribution and the highest combined deduction from a krone of pay is about 61%.
- It has an equivalent for capital income. Positive net capital income is capped at 42%, with the same mechanics.
There is a second ceiling people confuse with this one in conversation: the threshold, the DKK 641,200 and DKK 777,900 figures. A ceiling caps the percentage; a threshold is where the next tax starts. They are not the same thing, and only one of them applies to you if your salary is ordinary.
The allowances you get without asking
Three come automatically to anyone with pay subject to the labour market contribution, and their size for 2026 is published skat.dk:
| Allowance | 2026 | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Personal allowance (personfradrag) | DKK 54,100 | Everyone with income; reduces both state and municipal tax |
| Employment allowance (beskæftigelsesfradrag) | 12.75%, capped at DKK 63,300 | Reaches the cap at an income of DKK 496,471 |
| Job allowance (jobfradrag) | 4.5% of income above DKK 235,200, capped at DKK 3,100 | Automatic, no application |
Here is the part almost no salary calculator spells out: the employment allowance and the job allowance are ligningsmæssige fradrag - deductions made when your taxable income is worked out, not earlier. Skatteministeriet’s own table of the tax value of deductions shows what that means: a deduction of this kind is worth the municipal rate, about 25%, rather than the roughly 37% people assume, because it does not reduce the bottom-bracket tax base info.skat.dk. DKK 63,300 of employment allowance is worth about DKK 15,800, not DKK 23,400. The personal allowance, which does reduce both, is worth the full combined rate.
Does moving municipality save you money?
Between the cheapest and the most expensive municipality the gap is 2.91 percentage points, about DKK 17,500 a year on a DKK 600,000 salary before church tax. Which municipality you pay to follows where you were registered as living on 5 September of the previous year, so a late move changes your tax only from the year after. Every rate is in one table Skatte- og Vækstministeriet, but the gap is rarely a reason to move by itself: rents and prices differ by far more than the tax.
If your employer recruited you from abroad, before you compare net salaries check whether the researcher and key-employee scheme applies, because a flat 32.84% changes the answer completely. Common mistakes
- Reading last year’s brackets. 15% top-bracket tax above DKK 611,800 is 2025. In 2026 it is three brackets and the first of them starts higher.
- Treating the 44.57% ceiling as a cap on your whole deduction. It does not include the 8% labour market contribution, church tax, top-bracket tax or extra top-bracket tax.
- Assuming the employment allowance is worth a third of its size. It is worth about a quarter - the municipal rate - because it does not touch bottom-bracket tax.
- Forgetting the labour market contribution when comparing offers. A Danish gross figure has 8% removed before any income tax applies at all.
- Comparing a Copenhagen salary with one in a 26.30% municipality without adjusting. Same gross, about DKK 12,000 a year apart at DKK 600,000, and the ceiling gives part of that back at higher incomes.
- Not using the tax card. Without one the employer withholds 55% plus the contribution and you wait until the following March for the difference.
Frequently asked
What is the income tax rate in Denmark in 2026?
There is no single rate. On a normal salary the largest shares are municipal tax of 23.39% to 26.30% and bottom-bracket state tax of 12.01%, both calculated on your income after the 8% labour market contribution. Above DKK 641,200 of income after that contribution you add 7.5% middle-bracket tax, above DKK 777,900 another 7.5% top-bracket tax and above DKK 2,592,700 a further 5%.
How much tax do I pay on a DKK 600,000 salary?
Take-home on DKK 600,000 a year, for a single person with no church tax and no deductions beyond the automatic ones, is roughly DKK 391,000 in Copenhagen and DKK 384,000 in the average municipality - an effective total of about 35-36% once the 8% labour market contribution is included. Pension contributions, interest deductions and church tax all move the figure; your own numbers are on your tax card at skat.dk.
What is the difference between middle-bracket and top-bracket tax?
They are both 7.5% in 2026, but they start at different incomes: middle-bracket tax above DKK 641,200 and top-bracket tax above DKK 777,900 of personal income after the labour market contribution, so the two partly overlap rather than replacing each other. Middle-bracket tax is what top-bracket tax was called until 2025; the 2026 reform renamed it and put two new rates above it.
Does the 44.57% tax ceiling mean I can never pay more than that?
No. The ceiling caps the sum of municipal tax, bottom-bracket tax and middle-bracket tax on personal income. Top-bracket and extra top-bracket tax are added on top of it, and both the 8% labour market contribution and church tax sit outside it altogether. At 2026 rates the combined deduction from the last krone of pay reaches about 55% in Copenhagen and about 61% in the highest-tax municipalities.
Why do two colleagues on the same salary take home different amounts?
Three reasons. Municipal tax differs by up to 2.91 percentage points between the cheapest and the most expensive municipality, church tax of roughly 0.87% for members of the national church is added in some cases but not others, and the deductions on your tax card - commuting, interest, union dues - differ from person to person.
Do I pay tax on my pay if I am under 18?
From 2026 you do not pay labour market contribution until the calendar year in which you turn 18, which raises the pay of young workers. Ordinary income tax rules still apply to you.
